London merchant and Member of the Common Council, a close friend of John Wesley and one of his executors. In his will Wesley entrusted to him and others 'his books, now on sale and copies of them, in trust for the General Fund of the Methodist Conference'. Wesley often used his home, Highbury House, as a retreat. His wife was Mary Durbin of Bristol. They had the sorrow of losing two small children and she died young. Unhappy differences after Wesley's death induced him to leave Methodism, though he never lost his affection for it and began attending services again before he died in Bristol.
