Kendrick, John
1779-1813

A Sergeant in the Light Dragoons, born in Wokingham (Berks), he was converted by George Morley. While stationed in Cape Town in 1806 he helped establish a society on the strict Methodist pattern, which flourished despite official disapproval and the regimental officers' fear of 'enthusiasm' in the ranks. Letters requesting a missionary were sent to England. Although John McKenny was appointed in 1814, the mission was not effectively founded until the arrival of Barnabas Shaw in 1816. Meanwhile Kendrick had died in November 1813.
