Bastow, James Austin
1810-1894; e.m. 1832

PM minister, born at Hunslet, Leeds. He itinerated mainly in the north of England and Scotland. He established his reputation as a scholar through the three volumes of his Biblical Dictionary (1845-1853), which went into five editions by 1884. He died on 7 April 1894. His wife, Dorothy, née Smith (1811-1869), whose parents had been mainly responsible for establishing PM in Leeds in 1819, was appointed as a hired local preacher in the Ripon Circuit in 1831. Their son was the Rev. S.J. Bastow MA, LLD.
