McElwain, Archibald
1792-1874

A prominent businessman in Coleraine, he was associated with the commercial, educational and religious prosperity of his adopted town. He contributed of his time and considerable wealth to his local Methodist society, as prayer leader, class leader and circuit steward and to the wider Connexion as a member of Conference committees. He was prominent, along with his brother-in-law Thomas A. Shillington and his son-in-law Sir William M'Arthur, in the promotion and realization of Methodist College, Belfast with its provision for ministers' children and ministerial training.
