Peters, John
1795-1865; e.m. 1836

WMA minister, born at Dunaghy, Co. Antrim, on 10 December 1795 into a Presbyterian family. He early rejected his family's Calvinism, joined the Wesleyans and opened a WM school. Leaving that post in 1835, he travelled to England, where he joined the newly formed WMA. Much of his ministry was spent in Lancashire, with one spell in Glasgow. He soon showed himself useful, was Connexional Secretary in 1847 and his gifts as teacher and platform orator led to his being elected President in 1843 and again in 1851. His preaching was a great help to the infant denomination. He was an active supporter of temperance, peace and voluntary education. He died on 7 May 1865.
