Sellars, Samuel
1811-1874; e.m. 1835

Arminian Methodist and UMFC minister, born at Heage, Belper on 3 November 1811. Originally a Baptist lay preacher, his method of conducting evangelical services proved unacceptable to some of the elders and he joined the Arminian Methodists. Here his quaintness and tenderness won a response from young and old alike. He bacame a local preacher in 1835 and was immediately accepted as a minister. In 1837 he joined the WMA with the others and from then on travelled widely as a fervent and effective evangelist. He died at Rochdale on 5 May 1874. His son of the same name (1842-1907; e.m. 1863) was born at Gosport on 13 May 1842 and followed his father into the UMFC ministry. He wrote a life of his father and also The Quaint Preacher (by 1893). He died on 16 July 1907.
