Smales, Gideon
1817-1894; e.m. 1837

WM missionary born at Whitby. He sailed to New Zealand in 1839 on the Triton's maiden voyage. Although devoted to his work, he had a turbulent ministry, causing difficulties with both Colleagues and flock. He married John H. Bumby's sister, Mary Anna, and served in several stations on North Island, including 'Beechamdale'. He left the mission voluntarily in 1856 in order to provide for his family. He died on 5 October 1894.
