Stedeford brothers
1857-1929; e.m. 1878

BC/UM ministers, born in Bristol, the sons of William Stedeford, a tailor born at Yarnscombe, Devon, c.1832.

John Britton Stedeford, born 1857, entered the ministry in 1878. He was General Sunday School Secretary 1899-1904 and was President of the BC Conference in 1906 and of the UM Conference in 1915. He wrote a Guide to Church Membership (1917) for the UM. He died in Oxford in October 1929. His son Edward Thomas Stedeford (1887-1971) was a medical missionary in Wenchow, Chinafrom 1914 to 1951.

Charles Stedeford, born in Bristol in 1864, entered the ministry in 1883. He was BC Foreign Missions Secretary from 1904 to 1907 and UM Missionary Secretary from 1909 to 1933. During those years he was deeply involved in Methodist work overseas, visited Africa and China and was a member of the Council of the Selly Oak Colleges, Birmingham. He was President of the UM Conference in 1928. After his retirement he was made an honorary MMS secretary. He died on 7 April 1953.
