Watchorn, Robert
1858-1944

He was born in Alfreton, Derbys and joined the PMs through the influence of friends. Their high moral standards had a lasting influence on his life. At 20 he emigrated to the USA, where he became secretary of the United Mine Workers and chief factory inspector in Pennsylvania. He led the fight against sweat shops and child labour, was a member of the American Immigration service and later was highly successful in the oil business. He never forgot his humble beginnings and, among other benefactions, built the beautiful PM Watchorn Memorial Chapel (1928) in Alfreton, complete with playing fields and a library.
