Williams, Howard Owen
1919-2007

Chest physician, born on 30 August 1919 at Tonypandy. He was educated at Cardiff Medical School, graduating in 1944. His first post was at Harefield Hospital, London, where his main responsibility was for tuberculosis patients and he himself contracted the illness. From 1949 until retirement in 1984 he worked at the Whittington Hospital in north London with lung cancer and emphysema patients. Having given up smoking himself, he became actively involved in anti-smoking education, helped to set up the first Stop Smoking Clinic in 1962, wrote Giving Up for Good (1987), broadcast on radio and TV and was chairman of the National Society of Non-Smokers (later known as Quit). Retiring to Frinton-on-Sea in 1984, he continued these activities and was involved in the local Methodist Church, where he played the organ. He died on 14 February 2007.
