Wilson, John (1905-1992)
1905-1992

Teacher and organist, born on 21 January 1905 at Bournville, Birmingham, the nephew of Sir Walford Davies. He graduated in physics and maths at Cambridge, but in his 20s studied at the Royal College of Music. He taught at Charterhouse from 1932 to 1965, then at the Royal College of Music until 1980. He was organist at Guildford Methodist Church for several years. He served on the editorial committees for several hymn books, including Hymns and Songs (1969) and Hymns and Psalms (1988), in which a number of his tunes and arrangements are found. He was treasurer of the Hymn Society of Great Britain and Ireland from 1965. He died on 16 July 1992.
