Borlase, Dr Walter
1694-1776

Vicar of Madron, Cornwall, in 1745. As a local magistrate, he issued warrants under the vagrancy laws for the arrest of John Wesley and other Methodist preachers suspected of being Jacobites. His brother Dr William Borlase (1696-1772), a graduate of Exeter College, Oxford, was rector of Ludgvan and vicar of St Just in Penwith. Wesley read his Antiquities, Historical and Monumental...of Cornwall (1754) in 1757. His collections are now in the Ashmolean Museum.
