Eyre, Charles George

Irish minister, born in Belfast, he was educated in Portstewart and Coleraine and trained for the ministry at Edgehill College. During a period in Jamaica he became a close friend of Hugh Sherlock, for whose hymns he composed several tunes. His setting of George Herbert's words at HP 514, 'Carlisle Memorial', is named after the church in Belfast of which he was minister for nine years. His cantata for children, 'Abraham', has been widely performed in Ireland. He was a member of the editorial committee which produced Hymns and Psalms.
