The Group was formed in 1985, following the publication of a booklet on The Future of Methodism. It is an informal association of liberal-minded people, open to all, but predominantly Methodist. Since 1986 the group has gathered annually for a 24-hour conference to discuss key issues facing church and society from a Christian perspective. Quarterly papers are published on a wide range of subjects to promote discussion across a broad constituency. Diversity is welcomed as a challenge and spur to mutual enrichment and enlightenment. Following the Conference report The Ministry of the People of God (1990), the Group has continued to examine the nature of both ordained and lay ministry in British Methodism.
