Hughes, Donald Wynn
1911-1967

Schoolmaster, born at Southport on 25 March 1911, the son of the Rev. H. Maldwyn Hughes. He was educated at The Perse School and Emmanuel College, Cambridge, where he read Classics and then English. He was Senior English Master at The Leys 1934-46 and Headmaster of Rydal School 1946-67, serving on the Committee of the Headmasters' Conference from 1960. At Colwyn Bay he was a JP and held various public offices. He wrote extensively on education; also plays, light verse and operettas (including The Batsman's Bride, which was broadcast). His books include Reason and Imagination (1948) and The Apostles' Creed (1960). Three of his hymns (349, 419, 651) were in Hymns and Psalms, but have not survived into Singing the Faith. He died in hospital at Welwyn Garden City on12 August 1967, following a road accident.
