Born in county Cork, Ireland and educated at Trinity College, Dublin., she married an Irish Methodist minister, Thomas M. Kingston (e.m. 1965). A teacher and local preacher, she has occupied many positions within the Methodist Church in Ireland, including President of the Methodist Women's Association and the first lay convener of the Faith and Order Committee. She chaired the committee responsible for planning the World Methodist assembly and conference in South Korea in 2006. Committed to ecumenism, and with a concern for world mission, she represented Irish Methodism at the assembly of the World Council of Churches in Vancouver in 1983, has been a member of the Methodist/Roman Catholic International Commission since 1985, and has held several positions within the Churches Together in Britain and Ireland. She has been closely associated with the Irish School of Ecumenics in Dublin, a post-graduate theological institute launched in 1970. The ISE seeks to facilitate the study of doctrinal and other aspects of inter-church relations, draws students from many countries and is linked with Trinity College.
