Born in Richill, Co. Armagh on 13 October 1926, she was educated at Methodist College and Queen's University, Belfast. She qualified in medicine, specializing in psychiatry. Among her many national and international roles, she has been treasurer and President of the World Federation of Methodist and Uniting Church Women and chairperson and treasurer of the National Women's Council of Ireland. In 1999 she was honoured by the World Methodist Council by receiving the Badge of the Order of Jerusalem. She died at Kilkenny on 17 July 2018.
Her father, the Rev. J.W. McKinney (1895-1974; e.m. 1921), was founding Principal of Gurteen Agricultural College, of which her husband Dr Oscar Loane was Vice- Principal 1947-1959 and Principal 1963-1988.
