Carr, David
1944-

Methodist artist, born in Middlesbrough, brought up at Redcar and educated at Sir William Turner's Grammar School, Coatham. From 1962 he studied at the Slade School of Fine Art, London, where he was awarded the Slade Diploma in 1966 and won scholarships which enabled him to spend time at the British School at Rome. In 1987 he was elected a member of The London Group, with whom he had exhibited since 1965, as well as with the Royal Academy.

In his early years he was a pupil at Zetland Park Methodist Sunday School and was received into membership in 1960. In London, he worshipped at Kingsway Hall, Hinde Street and also Rivercourt Church, Hammersmith, where he completed his local preacher's exams, but without proceeding to full accreditation. In 2000 he was commissioned to paint interior and exterior views of Wesley's Chapel and in 2004 a double portrait of Lord and Lady Griffiths. He sees 'religious' art as having little to do with subject matter and more to do with the attitude one brings to it. He has a particular interest in urban landscape.
