The PM theological lecture was endowed by William P. Hartley in 1897 and was given annually, except for a break in World War I, until it became part of the Fernley-Hartley Lecture after Methodist Union. The only one to give the lecture twice was A.S. Peake (in 1904 and 1919); he and Atkinson Lee were the only laymen to lecture. For a list of the titles see B. Aquila Barber, A Methodist Pageant (1932), p.309; Kenneth B. Garlick, Garlick's Methodist Registry (1983).
