He was born at Lawrenny, Pembrokeshire, on 14 May 1767. He served in the Army, mainly in the West Indies, before becoming a prosperous London merchant noted for his military bearing. He was a member of the Committee of Privileges. He was associated with the WMMS from its inception and succeeded Joseph Butterworth as its lay treasurer in 1828. He also served on the committee of the Bible Society. He had initial misgivings about the wisdom of setting up a theological institution, but was won over. In 1836 he left Highbury on health grounds for Selly Hall near Birmingham, where he died on 30 April 1838. He was buried at Wesley's Chapel, his funeral service being conducted by Jabez Bunting.
