Hempton, Dr David
1952 -

Formerly Professor of Modern History at Queen's University, Belfast, he is now Professor of Church History at the University of Boston, Massachusetts School of Theology. His important studies of Irish Protestantism and British and Irish Methodism in their social and political setting include: Methodism and Politics in British Society 1750-1850 (1984), Evangelical Protestantism in Ulster Society 1740-1890 (with Myrtle Hill) (1992), Religion and Political Culture in Britain and Ireland (1996), and The Religion of the People: Methodism and Popular Religion c.1750-1900 (1996). His Methodism: Empire of the Spirit (2005) analyses the origins, development and significance of Methodism on a world-wide scale.
