Hicks, Charles Edwin
1871-1932; e.m. 1892

BC missionary to China, born in Portsmouth on 13 April 1871. He went to Yunnan in 1895 and with William A. Grist, at considerable risk, chose to remain in Tung Chuan throughout the Boxer troubles. He excelled as a teacher and did much to develop both the school and the training institute in Chaotung. He also worked among the Nosu people to whom his forceful personality greatly appealed. In 1901 he married Maria Bush, a fellow BC missionary from Victoria, Australia. He died at Moretonhampstead on 12 January 1932.

Their daughter, Irene, also became a missionary in Yunnan.
