Holden, William Clifford
1813-1897; e.m. 1836

WM missionary in South Africa, regarded as the pioneer of Methodism in Natal, where he was sent on James Archbell's resignation in 1847. In fact, he spent most of his ministry (1839-47 and 1851-81) in the Eastern Cape, but wrote a History of the Colony of Natal (1855), as well as The Past and Future of the Kaffir Races (1866) and A Brief History of Methodism and of Methodist Missions in South Africa (1877). He died at Grahamstown, South Africa on14 October 1897.
