Born in Sunderland, he followed his father George Stephenson Hornby (1841-1911; e.m.1866; President of the MNC Conference in 1900) into the MNC ministry after a year at Ranmoor College. In 1922 he became a tutor at Victoria Park College, whose history he wrote (1934), and continued as Church History tutor at Hartley Victoria College until 1940. He died at Prestatyn on 4 November 1964.
