Welsh WM minister, born on 5 March 1842 at Tregarth, near Bangor and known as 'Hugh Hughes Fawr' because of his height. He worked in the slate quarries and began to preach at 19. Though lacking early educational opportunities, he worked hard to qualify himself for the ministry. His outstanding personality, melodious voice and skill in sermon construction and delivery made him one of the most popular Welsh preachers during his long life. He contributed frequently to Yr Eurgrawn and Y Winllan and published a volume of sermons. He died on 1 May 1933.
