Son of the Rev. Joseph Hudson Kay (1871-1919; e.m. 1895) and nephew of Sir Robert Newbold Kay of York, who drafted the 1932 Deed of Union, he was born at Kineton on 29 January 1901. He was educated at Kingswood School and trained as a doctor in Manchester. From 1923 to 1927 he served as a ship's surgeon with the Blue Funnel Steamship Company, then went into general practice in Sheffield, where he became a prominent members at Brunswick Church.. He was a local preacher and held many offices at every level from local church to connexion, including District Representative on the connexional General Purposes Committee. He was Vice-President of the Conference in 1953. He died at Chesterfield in 1983.
His daughter, Anita, trained as a nurse and was elected chairperson of the Student Nurses' Association of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
