BC missionary to Australia, born in South Molton on 5 December 1818. Coming under BC influence when about 20, he became a local preacher in the villages around Bideford. After some months at Shebbear College, he was ordained in 1852 and offered to go to Australia. He and his wife Sarah (née Ingerson) arrived in Port Adelaide in March 1853 and were sent to Gawler. During two terms on Gawler Plains, riding from farm to farm seeking a verdict for Christ, he started 15 congregations and built more than a dozen chapels. It became known as the most Methodist area in the colony. He died at Port Elliot on 21 June 1871.
