Pioneer missionary in the Gold Coast (now Ghana), born at Groombridge, Kent. During his years in the Gold Coast, 1887-1897, he transformed the mission. The future missionary James Aggrey lived with him for a time as a boy. In 1895 he went as chaplain on the Ashanti Expedition under the leadership of Sir Francis Scott and was awarded the Ashanti Star. Back home, he served as a naval chaplain at Portsmouth and Woolwich, became Chairman of the Lincoln District and a member of the Legal Hundred and wrote Nine Years at the Gold Coast (1898). He retired to Beckenham and died on 5 September 1936.
