Irish minister, born at Bandon, Co. Cork, on 18 September 1792. Well educated, he was at first a teacher. He served as a missionary under the WMMS, in Jamaicafrom 1825 to 1832, in Canada from 1832 to 1834 and in Bermuda from 1834 to 1836. His colourful ministry was marked by frequent, sometimes unauthorized, travel, social comment, e.g. on behalf of slaves, and eloquent preaching. Talented and touchy, vulnerable to personal criticism and vehement in his prosecution of what he considered just, he attracted much opposition. He died at Montreal on 21 June 1838.
