He trained for the ministry atRichmond College, but after eleven years in circuit went to the Queen's College, Birmingham and was ordained priest in 1950. As vicar of Madeley he followed an illustrious predecessor,John Fletcher, on whom he gave the WHS Lecture in 1960. From 1959 to 1977 he was rector of Checkley, Staffs. He retired to North Devon. An assiduous scholar, he spent many years on a meticulous study of John Wesley's English, resulting in articles in the WHS Proceedings on his use of slang, proverbial expressions etc. and in a book John Wesley's English (1962). He also wrote a life of A.M. Toplady, Within the Rock of Ages (1983).
