Lott, Dr Eric J.

Missionary in India. He was trained at Richmond College and received his M.Litt and Ph.D. from Lancaster University for studies in Hinduism. He served in Andhra Pradesh 1959-77, where he became proficient in Telugu and Sanskrit, later also learning Kannada. From 1962 he taught at the Andhra Union Theological College and from 1977 to 1988 at the United Theological College, Bangalore, where he was Professor of Religion and Culture, editor of the Bangalore Theological Forum and Dean of Doctoral Research, specializing in eco-theology. Among numerous other publications, his pioneering writings on the Indian religious traditions (e.g. Vedantic Approaches to God (1980) and Vision, Tradition, Interpretation (1988)) address the issue of theological inculturation. On returning to Britain he had an inner-city ministry in Leicester 1988-94. His Cambridge University Teape Lectures, delivered in India, were published in 2005 under the title Religious Faith, Human Identity. A Festschrift in his honour was published in1997.
