PM itinerant, he was born on 31 August 1790 at Mappleton near Hull, to a father who had abandoned Roman Catholicism for Methodism and who entertained William Bramwell and other preachers in the family home. Thomas served in the Navy when young. Converted in 1813, he became a WM local preacher, but in 1821 gave allegiance to the PMs and was immediately engaged as an itinerant missioner, opening up large areas of Lancashire and the northern dales. He came to be known as 'the Apostle of Dales Circuit' and laid the foundations for much successful PM work. He died on 2 April 1856.
