John Maddern was born in Cornwall (where John Wesley sheltered in his home in 1745) and had become an itinerant by 1746. In 1751 he married Molly Francis, the mistress of the girls' school at Kingswood and he himself was the English master at Kingswood, 1756-57. They left after the fire in 1757, Mrs Maddern being succeeded by Grace Murray. Maddern was dead by 1770, but Wesley thought highly of his wife's service at Kingswood and from 1770 to 1782 she was housekeeper at the New Room.
