Born in Hull on 21 December 1838, he was President of the MNC Conference in 1891 and attended the World Methodist Conference in Washington DC. His honorary doctorate was conferred by the Protestant Methodist University of Maryland. While visiting a son in South Africa, he served as a Congregationalist pastor in Capetown from 1902 to 1907. When he retired in 1913, his membership was with Woodhouse Lane UM Church in Leeds, although he lived in Pocklington, where he worshipped at the WM church. He died at Pocklington on 28 February 1921.
His son, Sir Arthur Harold Marshall (1870-1956), born at Ashton-under-Lyne on 2 August 1870, was a local preacher. A National Liberal, he was MP for Wakefield 1910-1918 and for Huddersfield 1922-1923. Knighted in 1918, he was a Liberal whip and secretary of the Yorkshire Liberal Federation. He died at Bournemouth on 18 January 1956.
