Hymnwriter, born on 17 October 1833 at West Hackney and educated at St. John's College, Cambridge. He became secretary of the European Freedom Committee. Following a spiritual experience, he joined the Methodist New Connexion, but then trained for the Congregational ministry and was ordained in 1860. Three of his hymns (HP 423, 494 and 748) were in Hymns and Psalms, but none of them is found in Singing the Faith.
