Morgan, John
1792-1872; e.m. 1820

The first WM missionary to The Gambia, born in May 1792 at Torquay. He was sent to The Gambia in response to a request from the Governor, Sir Charles Macarthy. His instructions were to establish work up the river Gambia (but he was defeated by the climate) and to learn Mandinka (but he decided Wolof would be more useful). He had more success in ministering to liberated slaves in St Mary's (now Banjul) and as a result Gambian Methodism has always flourished mainly in the Aku community. After four years he was forced to return to Britain for health reasons in 1825. He died in Torquay on 14 June 1872.
