He was born and spent his whole ministry in India. After training at Handsworth College, he worked in the Muslim stronghold of Hyderabad from 1923 and later in training village evangelists. Though staunchly opposing union with the Anglicans, he gave his wholehearted support to the CSI after 1947 and in 1960 became Bishop of Medak, a huge and diverse diocese experiencing divisive tensions. He died in Birkenhead on 12 January 1972.
