Beginning his business career on a borrowed half crown he became a prosperous boot manufacturer with a chain of shops in South London. He belonged to the Wesleyan Reform movement, and was William Booth's first patron, challenging him to offer for the ministry with the promise of financial support. He also introduced him to his future wife, Catherine Mumford.
