Born on 28 May 1811 in Liverpool. He began as a WM but joined the Warrenite secession in 1835 and briefly served the WMA as a paid evangelist. Returning to his trade as a tailor, he left the WMA in 1840 and started a Free Gospel Church which joined the Independent Methodist Connexion in 1841. He was connexional President on four occasions, secretary for eleven years and editor of the Free Gospel Advocate (1849-1852, 1859-1862). He travelled widely, was a strong advocate of unpaid ministry and was instrumental in adding churches to the Connexion during the middle years of the century. In 1853 he published the first IM hymnal. He died on 8 January 1899.
