PM missionary to Australia, born on 25 December 1820 at Distington, Cumbria. In 1854 he was appointed to Sydney NSW, where he revived a feeble PM cause founded in the colony in 1845. For 20 years he provided effective leadership, encouraging the growth of churches in Sydney, Parramatta, Newcastle etc., as well as in Melbourne (Victoria) and Launceston (Tasmania). A man of deep piety, he was an excellent and indefatigable administrator. He helped establish temperance societies, criticized the treatment of aborigines, opposed capital punishment and founded and edited the New South Wales PM Messenger. He died on 27 May 1895.
