President of the PM Conference in 1898, born on 9 February 1840 at Holme upon Spalding Moor. He served as a missionary at Aliwal North, South Africa 1874-1879 and 1883-1888 and from 1894 to 1900 was Secretary of the General Missionary Committee. In 1900 he gave the Hartley Lecture on Christ and Missions. His son was Dr. Edwin W. Smith. He died on 12 February 1915.
