Turner, Wilfred
1880-1956

Vice-President of the Conference, 1944, born in Bradford on16April 1880, the son and grandson of local businessmen. He was educated at Bradford Grammar School and in Germany, and at the age of 24 established a worsted spinning business. From 1913 on he served for 16 years as councillor and alderman. He was twice deputy Lord Mayor before retiring because of poor health, which forced him to give up his public service, and later his business activities. Under his chairmanship of the Corporation Electricity Company, Bradford became the first local authority to have its own municipal electricity undertaking.

He served for many years as a Sunday School teacher and class leader and as a ciruit steward. He served on the Connexional Funds Committee. But, unusually for a Vice-President, he was not a local preacher and did not hold any high connexional offices.

He died at Bradford on 17 December 1956.
