WM missionary in the West Indies. The son of a respected planter in Barbados,he was converted by the preaching of missionaries. His obvious gifts and commitment brought him to the attention of John Baxter, who took him on as his assistant in the Mission. He pioneered work on Tobago and St. Bartholomew, and in particular in the Bahamas, where he was appointed as the first WM minister by the Conference of 1799. Arriving in Nassau the following year, he laid good foundations for the future despite discord caused by dissident Methodist preachers from America. He initiated new work throughout the islands and was appointed Chairman and General Superintendent of the Mission. Though superannuating in 1816 due to ill health, he continued his active involvement in the work until his death at Nassau on 7 or 10 May 1818.
