WM missionary, born in London on 18 April 1809. He was appointed to New Zealand in 1834. Although small in stature, he endured exhausting working and living conditions, constantly building and travelling to establish the work. Like his colleagues, he spoke the Maori language fluently. He encountered difficulties over land entitlement and hostility from Anglicans with patience and determination, entering into a more retired ministry after 1868. He died at Auckland on 5 July 1895. Other generations of his family also saw missionary service in the South Pacific.
