Born in Belfast, he began preaching in 1916 while serving with the East Yorkshire Regiment, mainly in France, and was accredited in 1920. He was President of the LPMAA in 1957. Employed by Robert & Cooper, timber merchants in Hull, he became managing director and during World War II was the Ministry of Supply Pitswood Officer. A Rotarian, he held office in the National Timber Trades Federation. A Liberal from 1918, he was vice-president of the Yorkshire Liberal Federation, but fourteen times refused requests to stand for Parliament.
