Whitehead, Silvester
1841-1917; e.m. 1865

WM missionary in China, born at Aysgarth, Wensleydale on 11 May 1841. He served in China from 1866 until his return in 1876 because of his wife's health. He remained one of the foremost missionary advocates, became Chairman of the Halifax and Bradford District in 1897 and was President of the 1904 Conference. From 1905 until his retirement in 1910 he was Governor and Tutor in Pastoral Theology at Handsworth College. He died at Manningham,Bradford on 3 January 1917.
