President of the PM Conference in 1914, he was actively involved in the Christian Endeavour movement and from 1907 to 1912 was connexional Sunday School secretary. During one of his periods at Hull he became involved in the Holiness Movement. As editor of the Primitive Methodist Leader for twenty-five years, he had his critics, but enabled the paper to survive the war years.
