Wilkinson, John, of Bishop Auckland
1773-1827

A Bishop Auckland currier, Wilkinson retained his Anglican allegiance after his conversion in his youth, but became a WM class leader and very active local preacher. He was instrumental in introducing Methodism into neighbouring places and played a leading part in the move to build a WM chapel in Bishop Auckland. He enjoyed wide popularity and a reputation for integrity. One of his sons, Samuel Wilkinson (1814-1899; e.m. 1836) went out to Australia in 1838 and was the first WM minister appointed to Melbourne. He was President of the New South Wales Conference in 1875. He died at Petersham, Surrey on 26 December 1899.
