Bennett, Dr Margaret
1868-1903

Missionary doctor in China, born on 17 March 1868. She worked in the East End before leaving for China in 1898 under the auspices of Women's Work. After being forced by the Boxer rising to take refuge in Japan, she returned to Wuchang, where she opened a hospital in February 1903. But after five months she died of dysentry on 6 October 1903. The hospital was named the 'Margaret Bennett Memorial Hospital' in her memory and the work was continued by her colleague, Jean Shillington.
