Woodford, George Ernest
1873-1970; e.m. 1898

Missionary in India, born at Stone, Bucks. After training at Richmond College, he served in Bengal 1898-1925 among the Santal tribes, campaigning against official corruption and the vicious system of land tenure and contributing to the McAlpine Report (1909) which mitigated the worst evils of the system. He strongly opposed drink and gambling, founded a boarding school and supported the hospital at Sarenga, but as Chairman was unhappy in administrative responsibilities. Physically robust and of great courage, he could be an obstinate and sometimes difficult colleague. He died at Towcester on 9 July 1970.
